The Irresistible Affenpinscher

The Irresistible Affenpinscher uses its front legs with great dexterity, like a monkey. It can hold its toys in its paws, use its paws to hold onto another dog, or put its paws around its owner’s neck. It also uses its paws for climbing, and some Affenpinschers have been known to easily scale stairs.

People who own and love the Affenpinscher can’t understand why, over the years, it hasn’t become more popular. The following is a quote taken from a “love letter” written by a new owner of an Affenpinscher puppy to the breeder.

“We are totally, absolutely, hopelessly, totally in love with our little Meerschaum! From the first second we saw his little black shoe button eye with matching nose and all those funny fluffy feathers sticking out randomly from his face – his Dear Face lovely and lovely – we were head over heels in love. I’ve had puppies (who eventually became dogs, of course) all my life, but this charm bracelet is so good it’s hard to believe she’s only four and a half months old.”

There are many anecdotes that reflect the character and temperament of this breed. One that comes to mind is the story of a woman who had just returned with her husband from a trip abroad. The next day she was sick and was home recovering on the couch while her husband was at work. Suddenly, she was woken up by loud angry barking coming from the room next to her. The two sleeping Labrador retrievers barely stirred as the growing intensity of barking and growling from the young Ella Affenpinscher forced her to investigate. When she entered the next room, she saw an intruder who had climbed part of the open window but was kept at bay by her little dog, which was spiky and ready to attack. As she and the intruder locked eyes, they both swerved, one toward the phone, the other toward flight. Thank God for his little dog with his fearless determination! Evidently the intruder had been watching the house and guessed that the inhabitants were still gone. This woman believes that her little Affenpinscher of hers probably saved her life.

One of the mottos associated with this breed is “Affenpinschers, I bet you can’t have just one!” Because they are so cute and small, new owners often want a playmate for their first dog. The introduction of a new puppy can cause some confusion and jealousy in the original dog, which can result in a lapse in training. Dogs are territorial and scent marking is in their nature. Human beings must be vigilant and persistent in maintaining a clean and odor-free home.
